It started with a visit to a government hospital in Mumbai.
I saw families camping out in basements and parking lots. Some had been there for days, waiting, hoping to meet a mental health professional. The psychiatric wards were overcrowded. The air smelled like damp walls and dirt. People were in visible distress but the system was too stretched to see them as anything more than a case-load to manage. Those "patients" were being treated with no dignity or care. Some of them said they had been locked up for years.
It was shocking. But being angry wasn’t enough. I knew I had to do something. Something that didn’t wait for policy change, funding, or perfect conditions. Something that started from the ground up and benefitted people from the grassroots level.
